Your Attic’s Secret to a Healthy Home

Writer's picture: Don CampbellDon Campbell

When was the last time you thought about your attic? If your answer is "never" or "a long time ago," you’re not alone. Tucked away above us, this dark and often forgotten space is easy to ignore—but it plays a huge role in the health of your home.

Regularly checking your attic can save you from costly repairs and unexpected headaches down the line. Having spent plenty of time in attics, here are my top tips to keep this hidden gem in great shape:

🛏️ 1. Insulation: Your Attic’s Comfort Blanket

Think of your attic insulation as your home’s comfort buffer. Without the right amount, your attic can’t regulate temperature, leading to higher energy bills and less comfort indoors.

Quick Check:

  • Winter: The attic should feel just slightly warmer than the outside.

  • Summer: It should be a few degrees hotter or the same as the outdoor temperature.

Getting this balance right keeps your home cozy year-round.

🌬️ 2. Ventilation: Let It Breathe

Ventilation is your attic’s secret weapon. Proper airflow prevents summer heat from turning it into a sauna and keeps winter moisture from building up. Without it, you risk condensation wreaking havoc on roofing nails and metal components, leading to costly corrosion.

Pro Tip: Check for vents or grilles along the soffits. If airflow isn’t cutting it, consider adding roof vents to help circulate air.

🐭 3. Uninvited Guests: Rodent Watch

Rodents and birds think of attics as their perfect Airbnb—quiet, cozy, and unoccupied. Unfortunately, these freeloaders can cause big problems.

Keep Them Out:

  • Seal all gaps and cracks with silicone, especially around soffits and fascia.

  • Inspect for tiny openings—rodents don’t need much space to move in.

  • Once a year, apply natural repellents around your home. Peppermint and garlic are great at keeping critters away while being safe for your family.

🔧 4. Check Your MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing)

Your attic isn’t just a storage space—it houses some critical systems. Take a good look at your mechanical, electrical, and plumbing components to ensure everything is in tip-top shape. A quick inspection could save you from surprise leaks or malfunctions.

💡 5. Light It Up

Let’s be honest—no one enjoys stumbling around a dark attic. Adding proper lighting might feel optional, but it’s a game-changer for regular inspections. With good lighting, spotting issues becomes much easier, and you’ll actually want to go up there (well, maybe).

Why It Matters

At Prende Skylights, we make attic health a priority during our projects. Why? Because a well-maintained attic can mean the difference between a home that runs smoothly and one with hidden (and expensive) problems.

By following these simple steps, you’re not just protecting your attic—you’re protecting your entire home. So, go ahead, take a peek up there and show your attic some love. Your future self will thank you!
